Barna GAA Notes
Barna Senior Team, were relegated from the A division to the B division
on Saturday last. Not taking away from Annaghdown, who were victorious
and fully deserved their victory by the score of 0-11 to 0-7. As in
recent games Barna again missed crucial close in goal opportunities that
could have easily given us a different result. The Annaghdown game plan
was to get the ball into their forwards and put them within scoring
distance and this they did with a certain amount of success. Whereas
Barna tried, as they have done , this year, to carry the ball right to
the goal line and hope for the best. Barna are not much of the mark, in
talent and skill than the other teams they met in the league Div A, this
year, but continued again, to squander good scoring opportunities by not
taking their chances when, within 30/40 yards from goal. Waiting for
that sure opportunity before firing the ball over the bar or into the
net , has cost Barna dearly. At half time with Annaghdown leading by 0-6
to 0-3, I honestly thought that Barna would swing it in the second half,
having to play into their favourite scoring goal towards the dressing
rooms. However it was Annaghdown, who came out and scored another three
points before the home side settled into their stride. On a few
occasions Barna came back to reduce the gap , but were playing catch up,
at this time, all the way to the final whistle. The final score was 0-11
to 0-7 in favour of Annaghdown.
It’s a pity for Barna , as we were hoping for a final crack at staying
up with a game against Moycullen, this Sunday Nov 14th, but now any
result from that game does not matter to Barna, but does to other teams,
above them, of course. Barna’s loss will please Moycullen to no end ,
but not some of the other teams. Moycullen, have always had difficulty
with Barna, the team from Galway Bay side of the mountain separating us
from the Corrib. Barna under the management of Pat Fallon and his team,
need to find a solution to Barna’s forward problem as soon as possible
after the new year, otherwise we are looking at intermediate football in
the future. In saying this, I have to say we have been here before and
found Division b exciting in that two teams are relegated and every
effort of urgency is pit into survival from the beginning of the season.
This year was an exception with Oranmore Maree already doomed from the
the first game of the season. There will be some very interesting teams
and clashes in Division B next year, with it all to play for , no doubt.
For us at Barna, 2004 is best forgotten for all of us, in a hurry, roll
on 2005.
An interesting Spectator at the Barna game was Peter Ford , our new
County Manager, who travelled up from Castlebar , his home to take in
the game. Peter confirmed to me that his dad played for Galway senior
hurlers in 53 and was on the Railway cup team. His father grew up and
lived in the village of Kinvara and there is still the old family shop
there. His father moved to Mayo to take up an appointment of work there.
There was no winner of the Jackpot Lotto when numbers 1,2,4, and 17 were
pulled.
There were four Match three winners and the Jackpot now goes to 4,650
euro. The draw is now at Donnelly’s each Sunday , as the Twelve Pins in
now closed again.
