Subject: Barna GAA Notes Apr 27th 04
Barna Junior A Team , had a convincing win in the third round of the 2004
West Board league on Friday night last when they beat Oranmore /Maree by
4-11 t0 2-6. This was Barna’ Second win in this years league ,which so far
after three rounds, does not boast a Team with a unbeaten winning streak.
This year its going to be a fiercely competitive in the West Board Junior A
league, with all teams , having the ability to win the West Board League or
Championship. Best for Barna last Friday night were Aidan O’Connor , Gus
Flaherty, Ger Butler, Pat Fallon and Tony Barret, who scored three goals, on
the night.
However when the senior championship begins in earnest, matters could
change drastically with many of these players regraded. This will certainly
me a problem for the Barna club, who will need additional bodies for their
senior panel, with the loss of a few Senior players to Australia, gone down
under, on the yearly visa.
Just this week the club lost the services for the summer season of our Star
Forward Peadair Friel and Former Galway Under 21 player Enda Conneely, who
are both gone to Boston for the Summer. We wish them the best of luck, they
will be dearly missed, in already weakened Senior Team.
The Barna Under 14 Team are beginning to look promising for this years Feile
as over the week-end they beat Oranmore /Maree/Carraroe , Carna Cashel to
reach the final in their group in which they will meet a Monivea/Abbey.
Three players to shine so far in the tournament , are Proinias McComiskey,
Ronan Geraghty and, Cian Thornton
The Barna GAA Lotto was not won on Saturday last when numbers 1, 8, 20 24
were drawn. There were however five Match three winners. The Jackpot now
goes to 3,150 euro. Next week’s draw and further draws will now revert back
to Sunday nights, as Saturdays just did not suit the sellers or buyers for
that matter.
Congratulations John O, Pete W and Stephen J ,with winning the replay of the
National League Semi Final, last Sunday . I was one of the estimated six to
seven hundred Galwegians, who travelling the long road north to Omagh, last
Sunday week, some as far away as Spideal to support their County. It was
certainly worth the trip up north, as our Lally Supporters coach also
stopped along the road to pick up the odd diehard fans in Galway, Tuam and
Milltown.
The Yeats Country Inn, owned by an Aran Islander, was the stopping point for
food on the long trip home. This eating house is becoming a popular Galway
meeting place, for the Galway fans making their way back from games up
north, including Sligo.
