With only the Under 17 males team the only male team in action, all focus
was on our Ladies Team, who on Sunday last finished their first year in
ladies football when they completed against Salthill in the West Board
Junior Final B Final. This game was played in Killannin on a pitch that was
in excellent condition on a very dry afternoon for football. This indeed
was a long year for this new Barna Team, who were competing in their second
of two finals , but lost out this time to a young Salthill Team, who were
the better alround team on the day. I say this as earlier in the League
Barna had beaten the same opposition. But it was indeed a long year , for
this more overall and adult Barna Team who lost by the score of 4-9 to
0-8.
Now can I say that the score would have indeed flattered the Salthill girls,
as three soft goals would have made this game a thirteen point victory
rather than four points , which to my mond would have been a true reflection
of the balance of the game. Barn tried hard for goals as we entered that
last quarter, but a super performance from the Salthill Goalkeeper Sinead
Conneely
prevented Barna narrowing the cap , when points were there for the asking.
But you cannot blame Brana star Collette Butler as she knew only to well
that nothing but goals would save them and the less experienced lost faith
in their own ability to win even tough the gap could have indeed been
narrowed. Salthill controlled centrefield with Aoife Cummins and Clare
Molloy to the fore and their forwards lead by Rosina Coleman, were always
ready to carry the ball that lead to those goals . They also had a fine
performance from Corner back Clare Brennan from Furbo ,sister of Barna minor
male Star Dave Brennan.
Best for Barna were Corner back Maura Folan, who would indeed be battling it
out for player of the day. Others to star were Grainne Flaherty, Sinead
Geraghty, Collette Butler Caithlin Friel and Therese Connolly.
Good luck to Salthill , who hopefully will now go on to represent the West
board at a higher level next year in Ladies football.
However it was a good year for Barna Ladies Football and for their Manger
Gay O’Brien who took this team from been a non existent outfit, to two
finals. Its the intention of the club next year to field Underage teams and
hopefully produce stars for the future Adult Team.
At the time of writing I have no idea whether Barna Senior Men will play
their second last game of the season this week-end at home. If so it will be
at Furbo Pitch against Monivea. Furbo Pitch is the first turn left after
Connamara Coast Hotel in Furbo.
Good luck in the very near future to Barna’s Captain last year and , former
Galway Under 21 star Enda Connelly as he has joined on a short term
arrangement, the teaching staff at St Enda’s in Galway. This is a collage,
whom I truly believe should be contesting Jarlath’s every year with the
strong contingent of Salthill and Barna players in their Ranks and maybe
some from St Mikes as well. I understand Enda will take a strong presence in
handling the Enda’s Gaelic teams this year
The Lotto Jackpot was not won on Sunday last, when Nos 3,7,8 and 10 were
drawn. However there were eight Match three winners. The Jackpot is now at
4,650. The draw next Sunday will take place at Donnellys Pub in Barna.
