The Barna U13 girls played a very exciting game against Na Piarsaigh on
Saturday last in Leitirmor in the Westboard Shield. Barna started off very well with points from Ciara
Lynagh,Sarah Cahill and Saoirse Faherty without reply. The Barna girls were
playing very well and this showed on the scoreboard when Orna Cunningham,
Aoife Codyre and Ciara Lynagh scored goals with Na Piarsaigh only getting one
point before half time.
The second half proved to be a much tighter half with Na Piarsaigh finding
the scoring touch and scoring some fine goals and points to put Barna under
pressure. Two goals and a point from Ciara Lynagh and a goal from Orna
Cunningham seemed to give Barna the win but credit to Na Piarsaigh they did
not give up and levelled the match before the final whistle to force extra
time.
The Barna Girls started extra time like the first half and two great goals
from Saoirse Faherty and a point each from Orna and Ciara gave Barna a
comfortable lead and even though Na Piarsaigh scored 3 points, Barna were
not going to be denied the win. A great team performance from all 20 girls
on the day. Aoife O Donaghue accepted the Shield on behalf of her teammates.
A word of thanks to Slemons Supermarket where Nigel provided refreshments to
the winning team on their way home.
On Wednesday night last the under elevens played St Michael’s away from home in Westside
and in a competitive match Barna came home with the spoils. On Sunday they hosted Oranmore in very
wet conditions at Barna. This was a critical game for both teams and after
tremendous efforts on both sides Barna eventually came through by a point on a
scoreline of 3:07 to 4:03. Barna had very good performances from Damien Roche,
Conor Kilbane, Mark Dennigan, Donal O’Cualain and Daniel Griffin.
Training continues on Saturday mornings at 10:15 at Barna pitch.
