CHAMPIONSHIP
Barna 0-9
Caltra 0-8
at Tuam Stadium
The Barna Seniors opened their 2010 Senior Championship campaign with a narrow victory over Caltra at Tuam Stadium last Saturday evening.
In the first half, Barna played into a strong wind which they found difficult to play into, indeed Caltra took advantage of the wind at their backs and went 0-5 to 0-0 up after 20 minutes, with four of these scores coming from frees. During this period Barna were unlucky not to have scored a goal when a fine shot from Paddy Kennedy was saved by the Caltra keeper. With time ticking down on the first half, Barna got on the scoreboard with two frees from DD Flaherty, who was to finish the day with eight points to his name.
In the second half Barna started to contain the Caltra forwards with all six backs getting on top of their opponents. Slowly Barna started to eat into the Caltra lead. The move of Brian Connneely to full forward was to be instrumental in the comeback. At the end of normal time the sides were locked at eight points a piece. However with five minutes of injury time to be played, there was still a chance of a Barna winner. Barna preceded to get three frees, the last one at the stroke of full time being converted via the boot of DD Flaherty.
The Barna seniors face Killererin in the second round of the Galway Senior league this Friday at 7.45 at Furbo Pitch. The club would ask all club supporters to come out and support the team.
The U10s are playing Claregalway on Sunday 30th at 10am in Claregalway.
The club would like to extend congratulations to Boleybeg NS Girls Gaelic football team on winning the recent Cuman na Bunscoil competition. Well done to all the teachers involved, especially Barna ladies player Fiona Flaherty who has team coach.
