Seniors Bow out of Championship

The Barna seniors bowed out of the 2010 County Championship last Sunday after being defeated by the current county champions Corofin on a score line of 0-11 to 0.9 in Tuam Stadium.

Barna started the brightest going four points to one ahead after a quarter of an hours, with Kieran Hanley causing havac for the Corofin backs despite this early dominance Corofin came to terms with the game and with Alan O’Donavon scoring four frees the teams went in at half time five points a piece.

In the second half Barna stuck to their guns and the teams traded points for the first ten minutes of the second half, then mid way through the half Corofin hit a purple spot scoring three points on the the trot, Barna fought valiantly to bridge the gap but despite their efforts the only dent they could make on the Corofin lead was a pointed from from DD Flaherty.

The club is immensely proud of the progress the team has made this year in terms of the huge work they put in to becoming a team that could hold its own amongst the top teams in the county.

The club would like to thank senior team sponsors Donneelys for all their support and to the huge number of club supporters who travelled down to Tuam to support the team.

The junior ladies recorded a fine victory over Mountbellew on Saturday evening in their league campaign . The forwards took the chances and with some solid defending and even though a Penelty had to be taken three times before they scored the Barna Ladies ran out winners.

The Barna U10’s panel travelled to Westport recently and took part in an excellent blitz with the host club. Barna fielded four teams and performed very well against a very strong club who have facilities to train all year round. The players were great ambassadors for the club again. Westport are planning to come to Barna before the season ends for a return match and the panel are back in training now to prepare for what will be a great challenge. Thanks to Murt Connely for driving and to parents who travelled and supported the teams. Well done to the coaches (Martin Commins, Ger Butler, Tommy Lenihan and Pat Boyle) for organising the trip.
Training takes place on Saturdays in Furbo at 10:30am, new players are always welcome!

It was another good week for the U12 girls in their championship campaign with a great win over Naomh Mhuire . Played in Barna in perfect conditions the Barna girls started well and took the game to N.Mhuire and scored 3 goals without reply . They took a comfortable lead into half time which they would not let go and ran out winners to reach the semi final . All girls played their part in what was a great team performance. The U10 girls played their first competitive game against Killanin and recorded a victory. The game was 11 aside and all the girls played well and scored some fine goals and points with Aoife Curran and Aoife Lynagh leading from the back and Jean Brennan, Megan Mulleady and Aoife Mc Govern converting the scores.
