On a bright and sunny Sunday morning Barna ladies headed to Caherlistrane for the annual Stella Mangan 7’s tournament. Twelve teams in all competed in the sevens and Barna had a difficult task ahead of them when they were grouped with Senior club Clonbur, all Ireland winners Caltra and Monivea Abbey. Barna took to the field in their first game against Caltra and lost by 2 points, losing Sinead McCormack to injury for the rest of the competition was a big disappointment. The second game was against Monivea and Barna won with great scores and many excellent saves once again from Katie.
The last game was against Clonbur and this was the closest game Barna had played losing out in the end on a very close scoring. The girls then qualified for the shield semi-finals. Barna were drawn to play Milltown and the game was score for score all the way through with it ending in a drawn game.
The decider was to be battled out in a 5 point shoot out with Barna winning out in the end by one point which saw them progress to the Shield final to once again meet Caltra. The girls took to the pitch for the final and showed great team spirit with fantastic scores and work from players all over the field winning out in the end to lift the Shield for the first time. The girls successful day was topped off by Melissa Casserly been awarded the player of the tournament. Many thanks must be given to organisers Caherlistrane who ran a fantastic competition and to the management team on the day of Sean and Enda O Flaherty.
