It was a busy weekend for the Barna GAA’s girls’ U16 and U14 teams, who both secured silverware by winning their respective championship finals at the weekend.
First up on Saturday were the U14 girls who had to travel to Rosmuc to play Grainne Mhaols. Both teams had tough groups to come through with Barna leading their group which contained Micheal Breathnach, Dunmore and Oranmore Maree.
Grainne Mhaols came into this game in good form and this was reflected in the start with both teams trading scores. Barna got the first goal to settle the team but G. Mhaols also secured a goal playing against the wind, this only spurred the Barna girls on and two quick goals and two fine points gave the Barna girls a comfortable lead going in at half time.
Full credit to G. Mhaols who started the second half the better but failed to score as the Barna defence worked hard with the wind in their faces. The hard working midfielders allowed the forwards possession to secure another goal and three points. The Barna girls had a very good season securing the league shield and going one better in winning the cup. Final score on the day Barna 4-9 to Grainne Mhaols 1-5. Meadhbh Corcoran accepted the cup on behalf of her team mates.
Next up on Sunday were the U16 girls who had their Championship final against Monivea on a wet afternoon in Annaghadown. The Barna girls have got better with every game and came into this decider after a good win against St Michael’s. The game started with both teams taking a long time to settle and the Barna girls got the first point followed by Monivea. As the first half neared an end the Barna girls scored another two fine points but there was plenty of room for improvement in the second half.
The Barna girls showed what they are capable of after the break by forcing the game against a young Monivea side and found the net on four occasions and several points. The final result was Barna 4-8 to Monivea 1-4. Katie Reen accepted the cup on behalf of her team mates.
