Caherlistrane Sevens 4th March 2012

On a bright and sunny Sunday morning Barna ladies headed to Caherlistrane for the annual Stella Mangan 7’s competition.Ten teams in all competed in the sevens and Barna had a difficult task ahead of them when they were grouped with Tuam Cartoon,Glinsk, Caherlistrane and all Ireland winners Caltra . Barna took to the field in their first game against Caltra and narrowly won in a very competitive game. The second game was against Glinsk and Barna won with great football played by all involved. The girls then went on to draw with Tuam Cortoon and had a great win against the host team Caherlistrane. Heading into a break for lunch Barna had 10 points and topped their group. The ladies were drawn to play Grainne Mhaols in the cup semi final. Barna had probably their best performance of the day when they won the semi final to once again meet Caltra in the cup final. The girls took to the pitch for the final and showed great team spirit with fantastic scores and work effort from players all over the field. The success of the day took its toll on the team and the all Ireland Champions Caltra’s experience won out in the end with them lifting the cup on the day. With 120 players to choose from it was with great pride that we watched the Barna number 8 Clare Hanley lift the award for player of the tournament and Barna boarded the bus home tired but delighted with how they had performed in a competition that hosts many senior Galway Clubs.
Many thanks must be given to organisers Carlistrane who ran a fantastic competition and provided food on the day. Congratulations to the management team of Sean and Enda O Flaherty and to the twelve players involved. Big thanks to our loyal supporters that attended on the day.
