CHAMPIONSHIP
Barna 3-12
St Mary's 2-2
at Barna Pitch
The Barna Ladies got their championship campaign off to a winning start with a well deserved victory against St Mary's at Barna Pitch on Sunday evening.
The Barna ladies got off to a great start with an early goal from Aishling Flaherty after a speculative high ball ended in the net. This was followed soon after with a point and Melissa Casserly also got on the score sheet. Three points from Maura Flaherty and one from Michelle Muldoon and Melissa Casserly gave Barna a comfortable lead of 1-8 to 0-1 going in at half time.
The second half was a much better performance from St Mary's and scored two fine goals but these were cancelled out by Helen Feeney and Maura Flaherty. The Barna girls were not about to let up and some solid defending kept St Marys shooting from distance. At the other end, additional points from Dervla and Maura Flaherty gave the girls the win they deserved. the final result was Barna 3-12 St Mary's 2-2
In the Under 14 league, Barna played their second game against Mountbellew/Moylough. This was always going to be a close game and this proved so in what was a very entertaining game played at Barna pitch. The Barna girls started very well playing towards the clubhouse and registered some fine scores with Ciara Lynagh and Katie Reen. The defence led by Orna Cunningham and Valerie Brosnan cut out the attacking options and this paved the way for some excellent passing to produce two fine goals from Ciara Lynagh. The second half gave the visitors some hope with an early goal but the Barna Girls dug deep and the midfield partnership of Roisin Nolan and Caoimhe Faherty kept working to prevent attacks with Caoimhe Slemon in goals pulling off some fine saves. Another goal from Ciara and point from Katie secured the win for the Barna Girls. All 21 players played their part in a fine team performance to overcome the visitors.
We wish Katie Kilbane good luck in the Connacht Minor A final this sunday when Galway take on Mayo.
