Ladies do club proud in Connacht Sevens Tournament

Barna Ladies GAA team travelled to the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Ballyhaunis on Saturday morning last to take part in their first Connacht Sevens competition.
A total of 44 teams entered the competition with 20 teams taking part in the Junior Sevens.
Barna were in a group with Ballinameen, Charlestown, Claremorris and Glinsk.
The girls played Claremorris in the first game and after taking a while to settle ended up winners. Next up was old rivals Glinsk, with a close first half Barna were delighted to come out on top and moved onto a third game against Ballinameen.
The girls beat Ballinameen and with three wins out of three, after a short break, the last game in the group was against Charlestown.  With some great play from all 12 girls once again Barna ended up winners and with four wins out of four topped the group.
Glinsk progressed to the shield semi-final and the Barna Ladies moved to the championship cup semi-final and faced a good Tourmakeady side.
With some great saves from the goalkeeper and all round good team play the Barna girls ended up  winners on a score line of 6- 5 to 1-4.
The girls faced a tough final against Kilmoremoy who beat Mountbellew/Moylough in the other semi-final.  Kilmoremoy, who had two Mayo inter-county players, despite some stern resistance from Barna, won the final with five points to spare.
The awards ceremony was dominated by the Galway teams and congratulations must go to Kilkerrin-Clonberne who won the Seniors, Milltown who won the Intermediates, Tuam-Cortoon who won the Intermediate Shield and Glinsk who won the Junior Shield.
Great credit also to the 12 girls from Barna who collected trophies and were delighted to finish so well in a group of 20 teams from five counties.
Many thanks to the management team of Enda Flaherty and Michael Gill and to Peter Gill and Betty Hernon for their support on the day. Thanks also must go to Connacht Ladies association for a well organised sevens competition with great facilities been provided by the COE.
